Carbon Footprint - A Beginners Guide
By admin on Jul 28, 2007 in Featured, Environment, Home & Garden, Guides
I am sure most people will have heard of the term ‘Carbon Footprint‘. But what exactly is a carbon footprint, and why is it so important?
What is a carbon footprint?
A carbon footprint is a measurement of the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that is emitted during human activities. Every single person has a carbon footprint, and this measurement represents the impact that our activities have on the environment in terms of climate change. CO2 is the main greenhouse gas and is produced when we burn fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal for energy. Therefore every time you drive a car, heat your house or turn on a light, you are creating a carbon footprint.
Although the term carbon footprint is most commonly used, the terms ‘carbon emissions’, ’CO2 footprint’ and ‘CO2 emissions’ are also used to mean the same thing.
Why is your carbon footprint important?
Our carbon footprint is important because there is strong evidence that the greenhouse gases we produce are having an affect on the world’s climate. Climate change is a serious problem that affects every single country and person around the world.
Calculating your Carbon Footprint
There are a number of different ‘carbon calculators’ available on the internet to calculate your own carbon footprint. Here are some examples:
