For all the strife that happens in the world, the most pressing issue is the issue of global warming. Al Gore truly deserves this award.

except for the fact that a good deal of his allegations in "An Inconvenient Truth" are either exaggerated, baseless, or outright lies...examples, Kilimanjaro has nothing to do with global warming, and he even changes the amount of projected sea level rising from 20cm to 20ft...gee, seems like one hell of a screwup.

Gore definitely does not deserve this award. His rhetoric about climate change is absurd. His film is a joke and is filled with misinformation.

He tries to make it seem that the debate is over on global warming and what causes it. The fact is the scientific community is not as sure as Gore would make us think it is.

If you have done any research on this topic you would have found that the "hockey stick" graph that Gore shows in his film is completely wrong. The correlation between CO2 and temperature was wrongfully portrayed. CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere actually lag behind temperature increases by several hundred years. So it is not CO2 alone that is causing temperature increases. More than likely it is the suns activity that is causing the warming of this planet. Which is made evident by the increase of sun spots and other activity on our sun.

Also, why is it that other planets in our solar system as well as the moons of Jupiter and Saturn are experiencing "global" warming?

As David Mayer de Rothschild said "because those planets are closer to the sun." This was in an interview on the Alex Jones Show. I heard it for myself.

In case you don't know David Mayer de Rothschild was one the people that worked with Gore to put on the Live 8 concerts about bringing awareness to the global warming issue. He also wrote a book that was given out at the Live 8 concerts that featured a polar bear with a life preserver with no ice around. If any of you didn't know polars bears can swim. That are quite good at it and can swim a few miles.

Please learn a thing or two before you start groveling to an idiot who knows absolutely nothing of science. The only reason he made that movie and made himself the leader of the global warming debate is because he couldn't win the presidency and has no political power. He needed something to do, something to show that he is worth it and does still have some pull in the political arena.

He is nothing but a shill and a disgrace to this country. He is a hypocrite for putting on concerts that did little to inform anyone of this issue and also for how much energy was wasted just to put the concerts on.

Seriously, how hard is it to see past his fake persona and care for this worlds problems? This man advocates sanctions on third world countries so they can not develop there natural resources to provide energy for their countries. These countries are then only allowed to use extremely expensive alternatives fuel sources that do not fulfill there needs.

All the while Gore has more than enough money to buy what ever "green" alternative energy sources that he wants. Such as solar, thermal or whatever. He also advocates that we trim back our uses of power while he still has a huge mansion that uses the same amount of raw power as it did before.

Gore uses the same amount of energy as he always has but those who can't buy these expensive alternatives are left in the dust.

Yeah, Gore really cares about us and this world.

Gore forgets to mention that the planet has a natural change that could not care about us. And it will heat up or cool down whenever it pleases because it is nature. Gore is another idiot trying to jump on the fear machine of control while we're still here.

It is hard for me to get upset about this even though I would probably not equate Gore with King, or Mother Theresa.

However, I see this as an incredible thing. It is one thing to be fed lies about why we should go to war (ie Bush Administration)resulting in thousands of deaths and another thing to be professing (possibly inaccurate) information about global warming so that we use less fossil fuels, and each person has a better reason to recycle, and people start thinking about respecting our earth for a change. Give it a rest please... on criticizing Gore! He has been preaching this message long before he was able to truly benefit from it, therefore I believe he is truly passionate about it and wants benefit humans indiscriminately, and the worst that could happen is we actually pass some laws that require corporate monsters to recycle and car manufactures to create more efficient cars. There are better things to spend time fighting over.

His movie has brought peace to Afghanistan, Iraq, Sudan, Somalia and Israel/Palestine. An Inconvenient Truth has also alleviated tension between the US and Iran.

Hey look my post is as factual as his movie.

Congratulations on your well deserved award.

What the hell are you talking about "anon" and chris, oh let us know who you are! Well, yes Wez, you are right, climate change is a natural process, but it is people like Al Gore that really brings it home to us that unless we pull our weight we will destroy the world!
No not by our present habits, that is obviously debatable, but by commonsense, the climate is changing and we are not doing anything, if it was man, it is now to late,BUT, what the hell are our polititians doing to protect us?
Long live Al Gore, at least you are making people think, also long live Dixie Chicks, the world needs you!!!
    Save the World

I completely agree with Chris, anon, and Wez. Al Gore has been decieving people with his film, and does NOT deserve this award. They probably couldn't give him a science award because he knows nothing about science, so instead they gave his the "Nobel Peace Prize."
What a joke. This is so sad...

See, this is the stuff that drives me nuts. YES, global warming is a natural process. The problem is, our CO2 emmissions are SPEEDING UP THE PROCESS.

As for Al Gore... whatever.

surprising replies posted - i think they're missing the point - even if gore's off base with his "facts", what would it hurt to (as a species) be more respectful of our relation to Mother Earth? what would be so bad about trying to minimize our impact? EVERYTHING is connected.

Since the dawn of civilization we have been burning things(wood/coal/oil/gas/animal fat) to get work done. Besides that we are now involved in feed lot agricultures that generates high levels of methane gas which is as I understand it much worst than co2--- so what's not to believe?
The ice will melt/the oceans will rise/millions will die just for lack of drinking water----THINK ABOUT IT!

The ice is melting/the sea will rise/millions will die/it will be a time where the way the human animal will change or go away! As to Polar Bears they can swim hundreds of miles but they depend on the ice for part of their hunting behaviors - who needs to check their facts?

Since when did the Nobel Peace Prize become political? Al Gore is a politican, not a scientist. Al Gore definately does not deserve this prize.
This is an insult to scientists around the world who actually contribute to the scientific community, not one man who uses his political influence for media coverage.

While many of you people who criticize Al Gore for his movie or political views, millions of tons of cigarette litter makes it to the sea to become food for the fish that will be on our tables.

Your main argument against global warming is that it is due to an increase in Sun activity. I am not surprised that you all believe in that, since United States school system produces an astonishing 90% illiterates (illiterates in science, that is) of all its graduates. I'm surprised you can actually write.
But, I digress. Sun activity time scales are usually short - months or even weeks. The other Sun-related reason is our orbit getting closer to the sun. The time scale of such orbit-oscillation is much larger than 80 years, since our global warming started. You could just as well blame the constellations, like an astrologist would do.

I wonder how many of you, SUV driving people, ever think that your nice Dasani water bottles are just a proof of the pollution in this country - tap water just ain't good enough for you, is it? It is the whole environment, not only the climate change that Al Gore is concerned about.

I haven't seen his movie, and I simply don't care if it is full of inexactitudes, or even lies, since that is not the point. The point is that people carelessness and greed destroy the environment. And the point is that we happen to live in this environment, and if it changes too fast we will be unable to react. Our accommodation time to a new environment (the one we create right now) is very long, tens of thousands of generations which is at least 100000 years (that is one hundred thousands, for those of you not so good with numbers).

Now, let me list some of the main environment problems:
1. overpopulation
2. global warming
3. destructions of ecosystems (Brasilian rain forest, African rain forest)
and reduction of animal habitats.
4. increasing rate of species disappearing
5. air pollution - not only CO2, but also dangerous things like Hg, NO2, ... maybe you have heard about acid rains?
6. water pollution
Well, this is the reason you drink Evian, but also, I should remind you that all the toilets are actually flushed trough the city's sewerage system into rivers, which bear that crap right into the sea.

I appreciate Al Gore's courage for trying to sensitize the most ecologically illiterate rich country to the environment problems. If we don't deal with this now, our children may not be able to do it.

I wonder how many of you, SUV driving people, ever think that your nice Dasani water bottles are just a proof of the pollution in this country - tap water just ain’t good enough for you, is it? It is the whole environment, not only the climate change that Al Gore is concerned about.

I haven’t seen his movie, and I simply don’t care if it is full of inexactitudes, or even lies, since that is not the point.

5. air pollution - not only CO2, but also dangerous things like Hg, NO2, … maybe you have heard about acid rains?
6. water pollution
Well, this is the reason you drink Evian, but also, I should remind you that all the toilets are actually flushed trough the city’s sewerage system into rivers, which bear that crap right into the sea.

I appreciate Al Gore’s courage for trying to sensitize the most ecologically illiterate rich country to the environment problems. If we don’t deal with this now, our children may not be able to do it.

C'mon guys, even the moron-in-chief admits that global warming is real and human activity is at least "a contributing factor". The pathetic attempts to pretend there is no scientific consensus on the subject are obviously backed by those who profit from the present plundering of the environment just as this allowed big tobacco to rake in extra billions with the same techniques.

Guys if you think that Al Gore is right or not doesn't matter. As we have become a race which is more reliant on industry, we are putting more crap into the atmosphere. Eventually we are gonna put TOO MUCH crap out there and it is gonna have a very bad effect. So look at it like this, make the mistake of believing him rather than the MUCH MUCH bigger mistake of not believing him.

Hey people!
Sorry to hear so much vitriol in so many people's words... As though getting bitter about the Nobel Peace prize is important...
The IPCC is the largest and most extensive scientific collaboration ever... and while there is significant debate as to the exact details of how climate change will effect the Earth system, the basic news is pretty straightforward... ie.. like all other globally significant forms of life we are changing aspects of the Earth system. The consequences of unmitigated growth is a change in system equilibrium. What that means is that the environmental system on which we fundamentally rely has multitudes of stable states which it can quite happily adopt, and that we are putting pressure on that system to change. The Earth is fundamentally interconnected, what you sh*t, you eventually eat. There is a great deal of debate over the potential consequences of climate change, to be sure, but the vast majority of the scientists who work in climate science and earth systems science agree that human induced climate change is real. The real debate is over the effects. Conservative estimates predict considerable changes including storm frequency and intensity, epidemiology etc., less conservative models predict a global transition to a radically different steady state if we can't change our behaviour. Which sounds kind of cute in it's way... but let's just say... it isn't...

sassy and Mike... do your own research... sheep don't have fingers with which to type... the very act of providing an opinion for oneself demonstrates that people are thinking for themselves... I'm sure that you've at least thought about this issue before. You seem to be under the illusion that the research that you've done is conclusive... it isn't... I wonder just how much climate science you've been involved with...? Maybe you could be more constructive with your opinions?

Laura... what is it about the Peace prize that makes you think it's for scientists?

As for Gore... well... that'd be political... :)

A reply to the anon comment on sea level rise:

The prediction onsea level rise varies greatly from scientist to scientist. For example, James Hansen - Head of NASA's Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York strongly believes that we may see several meters of sea level rise by 2100.
