Proposal to ban petrol cars by 2040

Petrol Guage: Will petrol cars be banned by 2040?The Liberal Democrats have outlined radical proposals to place a ban on petrol cars in Britain by 2040.  The announcement follows other high profile green proposals made by both the Conservative and the Labour party in recent weeks.

Their proposal to ban petrol fuelled cars was part of a wider plan to make Britain carbon neutral by 2050.

Speaking on the BBC1 Breakfast programme, Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell said:

“We should be working towards a carbon-neutral Britain by 2050. We should be working towards the elimination of petrol-driven motor cars”

Other key proposals which form the basis of the Lib Dems plan to make Britain carbon neutral are:

  • Introduce green mortgages to encourage more environmentally friendly homes
  • Charging lorries to use the UK’s roads in order to double rail investment, possibly creating a high speed line running north to south
  • Boosting spending on flood defences to respond to climate change
  • Encouraging microgeneration by paying a higher rate to producers who export energy to the National Grid
  • Creating a climate change levy of £10 on domestic flights

as there is currently not viable alternative to internal combustion petrol power cars, such a move is beyond foolish. Once alternatives are a REALITY, phasing out petrol cars may be considered.

Another good idea but hardly practical in todays climate. Maybe this is just another empty election promise. Maybe we should look to Brazil how have 40% of cars on the road being hybrids, but where’d we get the fuel to power them?
