According to figures released by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), British households dispose of 6.7 million tonnes of food waste each year. To help reduce this figure, a national campaign to reduce food waste in the UK has been launched. The campaign carries the slogan “Love Food Hate Waste“.
WRAP Chief Executive, Dr Liz Goodwin, said:
“It is sad that so much food is being wasted needlessly…..At a cost of £8 billion a year, it’s a serious issue that not only impacts the environment but our pockets too”.
The vast majority of food thrown away ends up in landfill. As well as producing methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas, there is also the huge amounts of energy used to produce, package, transport and deliver this food to our homes. This whole process of producing, packaging, transporting and then disposing of food generates the equivalent of at least 15 million tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
The new campaign aims to raise consumer awareness of how much food they are wasting, as well as providing information on how they can help to combat the problem. For more information visit the campaign website - www.lovefoodhatewaste.com
