Recycling Plasterboard
By admin on Jun 17, 2007 in Household Waste, Recycling
It is estimated that approximately one million tonnes of plasterboard is disposed of in the UK each year. Plasterboard can be recycled, but up until recently the facilities have not been readily available. Most households carrying out DIY or refurbishing their houses have therefore had no option but to throw the waste into a skip. This however may be about to change as a number of Household Waste Recycling Centres are currently running trials on recycling plasterboard. If successful it is expected that more and more recycling centres across the country will operate similar plasterboard recycling schemes.
What is recycled plasterboard used for?
Recycled plasterboard has a number of different uses, including:
- recycling into new plasterboard
- made into a type of block and brick
- used to make cement
- used to improve soil quality for farmers
- used in the process of growing mushrooms
Where can I recycle my plasterboard?
As mentioned above there are currently only a handful of areas in the UK that offer a collection point for the recycling of plasterboard. The areas that currently offer a plasterboard recycling scheme are listed below.
- Hertfordshire
- Hampshire
- Kent
- Isle of Wight
- Wiltshire
- London Borough of Bromley
If you are interested in recycling plasterboard but do not live within any of the areas listed above, contact you local council to find out whether they will be introducing a plasterboard recycling scheme in your area.
